In 2018, in Burkina Faso, there were 59,158 domestic workers, of whom the overwhelming majority (44,512) were women, accounting for more than 75% of the total workforce. Domestic workers are employees assigned to serve a person, the employer, or a family. Their activities usually take place within the framework of a household. They clean, cook, take care of children, look after elderly family members, and carry out other essential tasks for their employers without being able to claim a decent wage, reasonable working hours, social protection, or even a few days off. The exploitation of positions of vulnerability, abuse of power, and culture of impunity characterize the context in which they operate.
