An important step has just been taken in strengthening the dynamics of citizen mobilization among the communities of the Saloum delta, threatened by oil extraction and climate change. They have been equipped on how to advocate and develop strategic communication for the protection of their natural resources and to demand responsible public policies on July 8 and 9, 2025, in Foundiougne as part of strengthening their resilience.
The local populations of the Saloum delta, particularly the local actors involved in the fight against oil exploitation and the members of the steering committee (a multisectoral body responsible for coordinating and promoting sustainable development initiatives) of the Saloum delta, benefited from a capacity-building session on advocacy and were supported in the development of a communication strategy, successively on July 8 and 9, 2025 in Foundiougne.
Indeed, women, fishermen, farmers, breeders, beekeepers, oyster farmers… already facing structural economic vulnerability, remain skeptical about their future due to oil exploitation and climate change. Aware of this situation, the communities, with the support of CRADESC, are organizing to defend their interests.
The president of the steering committee estimated that the tools provided to them to defend their environment are more than essential. On behalf of the participants, who welcomed the two sessions well, Mame Diégane DIOUF thanked CRADESC and renewed her trust, as well as that of all the communities of the Delta du Saloum.
The voice of local communities, often marginalized in decision-making processes, must be strengthened and heard, as no development action can achieve the expected effects without the active involvement of the populations directly concerned. The Advocacy Officer and Program Coordinator of CRADESC, Oumar DIALLO, noted an active participation of beneficiaries who are concerned about the future of their environment and are committed to influencing public policies and mobilizing stakeholders.
