The beekeeping stakeholders of the municipalities of Diossong, Sokone, and Toubacouta now have their cooperative, which is expected to promote the expansion of the honey industry in this area of the Delta du Saloum. They held a founding general assembly on July 3, 2025, in Toubacouta with the support of CRADESC and its partner the Ford Foundation, at the end of which the cooperative was established.
The meeting was held in the presence of GIE and honey processors, decentralized services, development partners, and administrative authorities. It was an opportunity for the CRADESC, which has supported them since the beginning of the structuring process, to explain the components of a cooperative society, the governance bodies, and the registration process. A cooperative society helps to address the development challenges of horticultural production.
The members of the initiative committee led by Moussa MANE, established for the creation of the cooperative, previously benefited from a capacity-building session on facilitation and awareness-raising techniques. Also elected as president of the cooperative society for a renewable term of 3 years, Mr. MANE urged the cooperators to have a vision to advance agriculture in the Toubacouta district.
The administrative authorities, notably the Sub-Prefect, Daye SOW, and the first deputy of the Mayor of Toubacouta, Rocky DIAME, reiterated their thanks to CRADESC and praised the commitment of the participants.
This support for beekeeping actors will continue through the capacity building of leaders regarding their roles and responsibilities, as well as administrative and financial management. There is also a plan for diverse support for cooperators to address the development challenges of the beekeeping sector through its professionalization and access to markets.
